There are three kinds of ignorance and, accordingly, three kinds of idleness: first, knowing nothing and doing nothing; second, knowing something bad and doing something bad; third, knowing the wrong thing and doing the wrong thing. All of them were in full bloom on the territory of the USSR. Let’s consider why we need a diploma of higher education in our time and how it affects our future prospects.
Why knowledge used to be unappreciated
They say that the dead pull the living with them. And it’s hard for me to hear girls moaning now about how they don’t want to study. In my day there was a way of “learning without learning”: “Oh, I didn’t know anything, but I still got a C! It was a special virtue to say, “I didn’t know anything,” even if I had studied something the night before the exam. As a rule, this fashion was imposed on me by those who simply could not study decently. The same drabness that dominated the country crushed in the classroom those who were intelligent, able to work, willing to know something. Their wretchedness had to be disguised and justified, and this was done from generation to generation.
There was no interest in gaining knowledge and being able to put it to work. Throughout the world, skilled labor and higher education brought great salaries and income. In our country, however, manual labor was paid higher than mental labor. But who would want to dig trenches with a simple shovel if they were not well paid? And to be an engineer is just shameful.
As the famous Arkady Raikin said (“as a simple engineer… we spit on him”), and another mother said desperately to her daughter: “Even an engineer, as long as he is a good person. That is, the engineer is the most extreme. There was an anecdote when robbers, when they found out that their victim had this particular profession, gave her a tenner and let her go in peace.
Why study well today
And how much good engineers are valued abroad! Generally speaking, people with a higher education (real, not bought or simply “incubated”) will not be lost. In Japan, it is believed, for a reason, that by receiving an education, a person makes a significant “contribution to his bank account.
Parents go out of their way to teach their children. Japanese women traditionally quit their jobs after the birth of a child in order to prepare them for the competition of life. And the competition is enormous, especially when applying to higher education. There is a modern Japanese saying, “If you sleep 4 hours a night, you get in, if you sleep 6 hours, you don’t.
The students “chew the granite of science” on the conscience, and the worst crime, for which they are immediately expelled from the university or institute – a cheat sheet! After graduation – a new stage of competition: now for a place in a reputable firm. The type of firm one works in is also important, determining one’s social status and personal prestige.
But in our country too there comes a time, if not a time, when you cannot do without knowledge. Specialists are now in high demand. There is a demand for them both from state enterprises and organizations trying to survive, and from private firms that have already adapted to our difficult conditions.
