Why Reading is Fashionable and Useful
Unfortunately, the general fashion for books and avid book reading (“How? You still haven’t read…”) has been followed by a lull. Adults often have no time for books, and children who have always loved and enjoy reading, can not buy unthinkably expensive children’s books. In addition, there are difficult changes in the publishing industry. And it’s not just paper problems that are affecting us. Books around the world have always been expensive. And we are so used to penny prices for such labor-intensive products. Often there is a good home library, and at the same time a lot of books borrowed from libraries.
Read more as soon as you have a free minute. Always a pity for the lost time. It’s something you realize as you get older, that you’re wasting your life, you’re “killing time”. In our reality, a lot of time is spent on various expectations.
I always carry a small book or newspaper like “Argumenty i Fakty” in my bag. When I have to go somewhere for a long time, I don’t get upset, I’m glad I have time to read.
Do speed-reading courses help?
Needless to say, I still don’t have enough time. And I want to do more, including reading. A few years ago I was fascinated by the idea of learning the speed reading technique. Just then such courses appeared. I paid a decent amount of money and attended classes three times a week. However, I was not lucky. Some of my classmates were achieving amazing results, but I wasn’t able to increase my reading speed that much.
My failure didn’t mean that the course was bad. No, they were good. It was all down to me. Perhaps it was the fact that I was over… 18 years old, so to speak, and the more successful students were younger. On my desk I had very interesting magazines, such as “Foreign Literature”, “Ogonyok”, which I wanted to read, not to do exercises with them. My neighbor was very active (which also interfered a lot) in his courtship. But he did not know that in my head were thoughts of a recent amazing trip with a man I did not care about. These thoughts, it seemed to me, were the main reason for my failure to master the speed-reading technique.
What keeps you from reading fast
Although I did not succeed in everything, I learned some useful things from those classes. For example, that the main enemy to fast reading is the muttering of the words I’m reading. This mental articulation must be suppressed. You can either tap out a rhythm or just count to yourself while reading the text. Mental counting will not allow one to repeat the words to oneself.
It is necessary to tune in to thoughtful attention. As you read, you shouldn’t go back to what you’ve read again. And I’ve had that habit for a long time. My eyes should read the words vertically across the page, not from the beginning to the end of the line. When you read quickly, the most necessary information is grasped, the secondary is omitted (and how can you read fiction, like novels, in this way?).
In short, the lessons helped me somewhat. Now, when working on scientific literature, I first look through the text quickly and then process it slowly and thoughtfully, often outlining the necessary passages.

However, you must read with the intention of memorizing. Otherwise, I might end up like me: I spent a whole day reading a paragraph, but I didn’t learn it. And I lost such a necessary day in preparation for the exam. Then I had to catch up on the last night before the exam.
