Sometimes there are unexpected memory lapses. And then the person is confused: “After all, I taught, I knew, and suddenly I can’t remember…”. So, there is a clear shortage of iron and tin in the body. You can replenish them with chicken meat, fish, beef, and beans. These foods are included in the diet to strengthen memory. But there are other important points on how to improve memory and attention.
Peculiarities of human memory
Memory… How many centuries mankind has been struggling to unravel its mysteries, inventing ways to develop it. In the Middle Ages, people dreamed of creating such a watering can, with the help of which knowledge could be poured into the human head. It was called the Nuremberg watering can. But such a device was never invented. No one, not even the most brilliant man, can put his knowledge into the head of another, not even his beloved son or daughter. He can help, he can pass on experience, but whether or not it works depends on the one who is learning.
Also, we do not use our brain’s reserves enough. Of course, he must be given a rest, because he can work well only when he is in a normal tone. It happens that in examination time there is overwork, but modern man uses a very small part of his memory in general, about 5-10 percent of it.
Why you shouldn’t hope for a “maiden memory” discount
It is unlikely that in the near future, in the face of fierce competition, employers will make allowances for this. It will be more and more appreciated to be businesslike, collected, neat, reliable. And you yourself get annoyed when a girl, who is obliged by her duty to be there and serve the client, in this case you, walks around forgetting her duties, don’t you? And if customers will not go to such a firm, and prefer the one where service is at a high level? What conclusions will be drawn by the management of the losing firm? It is not difficult to guess.
Remember how everyone is surprised by the clarity and speed of service staff at Moscow’s McDonald’s restaurant? Very young girls and guys worked with lightning speed, without mixing up or forgetting anything. And how many times have I witnessed the unclear fulfillment of orders in the seemingly highest-ranking state restaurants, when to a gentle remark about something else being ordered, the waitress carelessly replied: “Well, I forgot!”
So let’s forget about “girlish memory.” In life, you have to withstand the competition is very stiff. A woman in general in this life is more difficult, and at work, if you set yourself certain professional goals, you have to constantly keep up, every time proving that you cope with things no worse than men. But remember, you do not have to humiliate their manhood. Sometimes you can slightly emphasize your feminine weakness, but only slightly.
Useful literature on memory training
There is no such thing as a bad memory from nature, unless, of course, cases of pathology, that is, disease, are left aside. If someone’s memory seems bad, it is either the result of inadequate self-esteem, that is, a person underestimates himself, or inept and improper use of his memory.
If you search, you can find literature on memory and how to organize yourself. Of the many books I would recommend that you read three:
- “The Art of Study” by Zbigniew Pietrasinski, a Polish specialist in the psychology of thinking and the organization of mental work;
- “How to Improve Yourself” by Czech sociologist Jiří Toman;
- “How to Develop Confidence and Influence People by Speaking Publicly” by the famous American human relations expert Dale Carnegie.
Maybe you’ll like the other publications you’ll find, such as Victor Pekelis’s “How to Find Yourself” and “Your Possibilities, Man.
Types of memory
If we talk about memory, it comes in several types.
Visual-imaginative and verbal-intellectual
People of the so-called artistic type have more developed visual-imaginative memory. People of the thinking type have a predominance of verbal-logical memory. It means that the first are better at remembering sounds, colors, images, pictures, and the second – formulas, laws. Of course, this division is relative. For example, it is difficult for me to say what type of person I am and which memory I have. But it happens that the verbal-logical clearly outweighs the visual-imaginative, or vice versa.
Mechanical and semantic
“Cramming” is a typical example of mechanical memorization. A good memory is a semantic one, which is based on understanding what is being memorized, establishing internal logical connections, making sense of the material. But sometimes it is necessary to reinforce it mechanically, that is, to both understand and memorize. It has happened more than once when I, exhausted by the textbook, made myself a logical scheme, which made the work much easier.
Long-term and operational
If you do not focus your attention on the new information, do not repeat it several times (preferably after a short period of time), it can easily be forgotten. That is, in order to transfer it from short-term to “long-term storage”, you need a volitional, conscious effort.
True, all the time you sprinkle all sorts of nonsense, which somewhere once heard once, all sorts of jokes, poems and anecdotes. It didn’t take any effort to remember all that nonsense. And I tell you every time, “If only you were that good at remembering serious things!” After all, all serious human activities, the very pursuit of excellence, require the kind of attention that depends on the word “should.” You have to be able to force yourself to concentrate when you don’t want to do it. And by itself one remembers what is interesting, what is exciting and what is pleasant.
Methods for remembering information
Literally, each student determines the ways in which it is easier for him or her to learn. For example, when I need to remember several names, I try to make some semblance of a word from their initial letters. Then, after remembering it, I easily reproduce the entire list.
I can use the method of the famous Roman politician Cicero, whose name has become a common name for brilliant orators today. Cicero gave great speeches, but he never used notes. Preparing for his speech, he memorized not the text, but his thoughts. These thoughts he “hung” in his house. When he gave a speech, he mentally imagined walking from room to room. Having touched the thought marked on the first paper, he imagined removing it and approaching the second.
Chapter 4 of Dale Carnegie’s How to Improve Your Memory speaks of three “natural laws of remembering. Let’s look at each of them in more detail.
Impression
First of all, you have to get a deep, vivid and lasting impression of what you need to remember,” the American teaches. And to do this, you have to concentrate. He suggests an interesting and simple method of remembering by turning numbers from one to twenty into pictures and associating thoughts with those pictures.
“For example, the word ‘wan’ (one in English) is consonant with ‘ran’ (to gallop), and so I imagined Roosevelt reading in his room, sitting on a racehorse. “Tu” (two) sounds almost like “ZU” (menagerie), and I imagined that the cherry tree Edison was looking at was in a bear cage in a zoo. “Sri” (three) is like “three” (tree), and I imagined Lincoln climbing to the top of the tree and reading aloud to his partner…” Nonsense? Don’t tell me, because you yourself just said that ridiculous things are easier to remember. Make a series of these digital pictures, spend half an hour memorizing them, and it will be your wand of choice for years and years to come.
Repetition
That’s right, our memory itself is slowly being freed from what is not in demand. I had to study physics and chemistry, but pretty soon all the knowledge in those areas evaporated from my head. I know from my current experience that I remember better the facts that strike my fancy, or those theoretical constructs that I have well thought out and repeated many times in preparation for lectures or seminars.
Only the information that is used is fixed in memory. In this case, I want to draw your attention to this point. I do not know about you, but I am bad at remembering names and patronymics of people. Usually they are called once when I get to know them. And at that very moment, I feel like my memory is failing, like something has fallen into the abyss and I can’t reach it. Then you feel terribly awkward when you have to turn, but how? However, I’ve managed and now immediately begin to mentally repeat the heard the name and patronymic, sometimes trying to deliberately say it out loud in a conversation. You have to be careful, because it often offends people if you call them by the wrong name.
Associations
The third law is “to form manifold and numerous associations with all the facts we want to remember. But in order for the association of a fact with others to arise, you have to think more about the fact. You know, maybe because I think a lot about the subjects I teach, everything I recognize is immediately associated with what I already know. One thought entails another…
But most of all you need the ability to make logical connections. It must be clear to me. Then it would be understandable to those to whom I tell it. If you memorize any material, be sure to comprehend the internal logic, then this guiding thread will lead to difficulties that may arise in answering, say, in the exam.
Internal logic will help you better cope with things in general. You just have to be able to distinguish between the main and the secondary, to see, for example, that by going there and there, you can almost simultaneously do this and that without wasting extra time.
Aromatherapy
The work of memory can be activated by smell. It acts as a catalyst. When our brain encodes an event into memory, it also encodes the circumstances surrounding the event: visual images, sounds and smells. That is why you can learn a material by breathing in a certain smell, and then during an exam from time to time bring a handkerchief with the same scent to your nose. Memorized will be better to remember. Do not forget to smell lavender before going to bed. It counteracts fears and insomnia.
